Peoples’ Yellow Pages
The Peoples’ Yellow Pages was published annually for a few years in the early to mid 1970s in Montreal. The editor of this edition, Garth Gilker, is perhaps best known as having founded the Santropol restaurant in the mid 1970s on St-Urbain at the corner of Duluth.
We will soon post on this site’s blog an interview we conducted in October 2015 with Gilker about his Peoples’ Yellow Pages. In the meantime, here is a low resolution PDF (11 mb) version of this third edition of the guide (circa 1975): People’s Yellow Pages Vol. 1 No. 3, as well as selected pages in gallery format below.
Combined with the slightly more salacious and photo-filled Montréal Insolite publication, these guides provide a rare glimpse into the specific hangouts, bars, cafés and neighborhoods that hip or alternative-lifestyle Montrealers of either linguistic community frequented.
